TMZ states that Harper filed court papers on Friday to end his marriage to Dern after four years.
The 'Fly One Time' musician has named "irreconcilable differences" as the cause of the split from his wife and is requesting that a judge deny Dern any spousal support.
A source close to the pair described the divorce filing as a surprise and added that Harper and Dern spent most of this year travelling the country together.
Harper is also seeking joint legal and physical custody of the couple's two children, 9-year-old Ellery and 5-year-old Jaya.
