Bigg Boss 5: Nihita's mom shocked by Mandeep's sex query

When Nihita Biswas Sobhraj made entertainment history Monday night by becoming the first contestant from Nepal to take part in Indian TV channel Color's reality show "Bigg Boss 5", back home in Kathmandu her family's moment of pride turned into shock and consternation at the first barrage of questions raining down on the 23-year-old. "I was shocked," said Nihita's mother Shakuntala Thapa, a senior lawyer practising at Nepal's Supreme Court, reacting to the question posed by one of the participants, news anchor Mandeep Belvi. "Did you have sex with Sobhraj?" Belvi had asked Nihita after learning the young Nepali woman was the wife of Charles Gurmukh Sobhraj, branded the "Bikini Killer" by the tabloids in the 1970s when he was accused of a series of tourist killings in several Asian countries -- a charge that he has denied all through his career in crime. When a blushing Nihita sought to parry the question, the next query was why did she marry him then. "We have a conservative society in Nepal," Thapa told. "People don't ask such questions, especially to people they have known only for 15 minutes. Nihita is young and led a sheltered life. We encouraged her to join the show thinking she would make friends with people from different cultures and broaden her horizon." "We didn't expect such sensationalism or ignorance." Thapa wondered how a news anchor could be ignorant about prison norms. "Sobhraj is in prison whereas Nihita is not," Thapa said. "How could the question of having sex with a prisoner arise?" Though Nepal's apex court recently ruled prisoners should be allowed their conjugal rights, it has not been implemented by the prison authorities and is likely to remain an impossibility given how the prisons are crowded and lacking funds and other resources. Nihita says she fell in love with Sobhraj, who is 44 years older, at first sight when she visited him in Kathmandu's Central Prison after she heard he was looking for a Nepali interpreter for his visiting French lawyer. The romance blossomed into a "marriage" inside the prison three years ago during the festival time when prisoners were allowed to mingle with visitors. However, beyond a ritualistic exchange of garlands and rings, there has been no actual consummation of the marriage that made Nihita the butt of ridicule and scathing public criticism. Thapa, who is close to Nepal's ruling Maoist party, is a feminist and a Communist who regards beauty pageants as derogatory to women. When Nihita was a baby, Thapa dissociated herself from her husband, an Indian from West Bengal who, according to reports, was a wastrel and maltreated his children. Since then, she has brought up her two children single-handedly, no mean task in a traditional society like Nepal where the husband's approval was once mandatory for many things -- from getting a passport to opening a bank account. Thapa, who watched the fourth edition of "Bigg Boss" last year, had liked the mix of participants, who she thought were intellectuals as well. However, she is dismayed at the present lot, feeling that since most of them share the same showbiz background, Nihita, away from home for the first time, would feel isolated in their midst. Thapa, however, admires three of the contestant. Folk dancer Gulabi Sapera, who narrated how her tribe killed girl children by burying them alive, is the one she admires most. She also admires third gender activist Laxmi Narayan Tripathi and singer Raageshwari, who overcame facial paralysis. She identifies with them because she and her children have faced severe struggle, with the Supreme Court even sentencing her to prison along with Nihita for questioning its impartiality in finding Sobhraj guilty of murder without real evidence. While some of the contestants, like actor Pooja Bedi, are reported to be carrying a designer wardrobe with them to "Bigg Boss", the climactic item in Nihita's simple wardrobe is a sari from West Bengal. The only bit of help she sought from her mother before leaving for Mumbai was for a quick lesson in how to wear a cotton sari.

Minissha Lamba blasts her 'Bheja Fry 2' director

Minissha Lamba is miffed with Sagar Ballary, the director of 'Bheja Fry 2' and her forthcoming 'Hum Tum Aur Shabana', who has been reportedly bad-mouthing her.

Shocked and hurt, Minissha feels it is Ballary's attempt to publicise his films.

"I used to consider Ballary a friend. But if by maligning me he is trying to get publicity, then he's hardly a friend," she says.

Minissha also feels this is Ballary's way of getting even with his 'Bheja Fry 2' producer Mukul Deora, with whom Ballary was apparently at loggerheads during the shoot.

Ballary has accused Minissha of shooting a promotional video for 'Bheja Fry 2' behind his back.

Minissha retaliates: "I think I got caught in the cross-fire between Ballary and the producer of 'Bheja Fry 2'. Since he couldn't hurt the producer in any way, he has chosen to make me a scapegoat."

"If the producer asked me to do a video I'd naturally do it. Why was Ballary opposed to it? It's so sad I've done two films with him. I play the title role in 'Hum Tum Aur Shabana'. So how can he threaten to chop off my role?" Minissha asks.

Minissha believes Ballary should have been "more responsible" with his words.

Minissha replies, "I worked in two of his films. I did 'Bheja Fry 2' although I had a small role. I did it for Sagar Ballary. And this is what he does!"

"I can understand him wanting publicity for his film. But at my cost? Not by destroying my reputation," she insists.

"If Sagar Ballary had a problem with me, he could've told me personally about it. It takes years to build a friendship. It takes just a few careless remarks to ruin it," Minissha says.

After Ballary's outburst, Minissha has not bothered to get in touch with him. "What is there to ask him? Does he feel negative publicity would help the film? I've spoken to the producer and he's pretty upset."

Minissha is equally aghast at reports suggesting her rivalry with Pia Trivedi during the making of 'Hum Tum Aur Shabana'.

"Pia is a lovely girl and she has a wonderful role in 'Hum Tum Aur Shabana'. I had absolutely no problems with her during the film," the actor clarifies.

"I am playing the title role, so why should I get insecure? I've worked in a film like 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' which had Bipasha Basu and Deepika Padukone. So what's there to be insecure about?" retorts Minissha.

The directors were keen to have Kat as they had worked with her earlier in Race, but she ditched them for a Yash Raj project with Imran Khan.





Now the duo, who have secured the rights to remake the Hollywood flick, have Abhishek Bachchan, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Bobby Deol in the cast.

This will be Anil Kapoor's daughter's second outing with Junior B, with whom she was earlier paired in Delhi-6.

Ajay Devgn in trouble over smoking on Golmaal 3 sets

A tobacco watchdog organisation has asked the health authorities to fine Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn for smoking in public while on the sets of his film Golmaal 3 in Goa.

In a complaint, on Wednesday, to the state tobacco control cell and the union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, National Organisation for Tobacco Eradication (NOTE) general secretary Shekhar Salkar said that Devgn, who was fined once for smoking in public in Chandigarh, deserved more stringent action as he was becoming a habitual offender of the 'no smoking in public' rule.

"This being the second violation by Ajay Devgn, we feel that the punishment given to such type of habitual law breakers is too meagre. In view of this, we strongly feel that the penalty under section 4 of the COPTA (Control of Tobacco Products Act) law for both one who violates the law and one who allows violating the law should be increased," Salkar said.

A local newspaper flashed photographs of Devgn smoking on the sets of Golmaal 3 on Tuesday with the film's director Rohit Shetty standing an arm's length away.

The general secretary of NOTE, which has in the past dragged Bollywood stars Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan to court for directly or indirectly promoting smoking, has also said that habitual violators of the COPTA law should be jailed.

"Fine for the first offence should be Rs.500, for the second it should be raised to Rs.5,000 and for the third offence an imprisonment for a period of six months, in addition to a fine of Rs.5,000 should be imposed," Salkar said.

Devgn is the third Bollywood actor to be caught smoking in Goa this month.

Earlier this month, actors Tusshar Kapoor and Arshad Warsi were hauled up by NOTE for smoking during a film shoot in Margao, 35 kms from Panaji, Goa.

"You don't understand. This is like an obsession for me. I can't get Robert Pattinson out of my head...I've never felt this way about any man before," Katrina, who has given hits like "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani" and "De Dana Dan" this year, told IANS.

"I went and bought all the four books - 'Twilight', 'New Moon', 'Eclipse' and 'Breaking Dawn'. I couldn't put them down. I've been racing through the adventures of the hottest vampire Edward Cullen for the last one week. I finished reading three of the 'Twilight' books in less than four days. Now I'm into the fourth. I just can't get enough of him," she said.

The actress now plans to meet Pattinson, who plays Edward Cullen in the "Twilight" series. Her representatives are in touch with the latest Hollywood heartthrob.

"Obviously I can't stand under his window to get his attention. So yes, the meeting has to be more formal. He says he's single, but I don't believe him. That's what they all say," she said.

The actor had recently denied dating co-star Kristen Stewart.

Sushmita, who is the first Indian to be crowned Miss Universe, has bought the rights to groom the girls for the pageant.

The ‘I Am She’ Platform is part of Sushmita Sen’s Tantra Entertainment, which was awarded the India franchisee to select “Miss Universe” participant by the Miss Universe Organisation.

I Am She pageant will take over from the Femina Miss India as a pre-curser to the Miss Universe contest.

Katrina Kaif’s New York revived the box office. She will be seen in full-fledged roles in two films this year, Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani and De Dana Dan and a special appearance in Blue. The gorgeous actress tells us about her latest film, director Rajkumar Santoshi and working with Ranbir Kapoor who is the next big thing.

“It’s been a great honour to work with Rajji. I have done most of my films with Akshay and Salman. I asked them who is the best director for an actor to work with and both of them answered that it was Rajkumar Santoshi. I had an amazing time working with him. I had a great time shooting the songs in Turkey and am grateful to Ahmed Khan for the fantastic choreography and Pritam for the wonderful music, as always,’ smiled Katrina.

Katrina has usually played the glam doll in most of her films except New York and, in APKGK her character seems to be more than just a pretty face. How does she feel about that? ‘I think I am very privileged that I keep getting fresh new chances with every film to better myself as an actress. In my opinion, Rajji has s reputation of not being just a fantastic director but also a fantastic director for actors and their performances. He has taught me a lot about improvisation. He has given my character and persona a new angle. It’s not anything like you have seen in New York or Singh is Kinng. It’s a completely different interpretation of Jenny, my character. Ranbir and I followed his guidance. We were always on the sets because being around Rajji, because you get to understand how he envisions the scene. Before every shot, he would enact my part and then enact my part. And we both would just stare at him in amazement. Then the two of us would have a competition as to who can copy him best. We just needed to follow his direction,’ she replied.

She and Ranbir are being touted as the best-looking on-screen pair of the year. About working with Ranbir Kapoor, she said, ‘He is a very talented actor and a very sweet guy. He is always lively and he fills the set with energy and enthusiasm. He makes sure everyone is having a good time. He is a positive force to be around. He is fantastic actor and dancer.’

Bollywood star Salman Khan went out of his way and gifted a branded bag worth Rs.250,000 to his 'Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna' co-star Kareena Kapoor.

Kareena and Salman went shopping together in Australia while they were shooting for the film and the young actress fell for a Dolce and Gabbana handbag.

'Kareena would usually land up shopping in the evenings after the shoot in Australia. She would go alone. But on one occasion, Salman accompanied her too,' said a unit source.

'She instantly liked a Dolce and Gabbana bag, stepped in and bought it. When she was about to pay the storekeeper refused to take the money saying it had already been paid for. Kareena stood zapped and wondered who could be that generous soul. It was only later that she got to know that it was Salman who had paid,' the source added.

The two actors plays main leads in Prem Soni's directorial debut 'Main Aurr Mrs.Khanna'. Sohail Khan, who has co-produced the movie with UTV SpotBoy Pictures, is also starring in it.

The film is scheduled for release Oct 16.

Divya bought the Ludhiana Gully Cricket team Saturday for season two that will kick-start Sep 19 and end in a grand finale at Kanpur Nov 20, a spokesperson said here Sunday. It will be played amongst 896 players from 64 teams in Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Panchkula, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Ballia, Patna, Gwalior, Lucknow, Kanpur, Allahabad, Surat, Nashik, Latur and Daman and will be telecast live on DD Sports Channel. Divya, who is from Ludhiana, will patronise the team and be responsible for marketing and promoting it nationally. She will also be involved in activities like grooming the players, cheering them and sponsorships for the team. "I am thrilled to be an owner of this team and will do my best for them. The T-10 format has enabled bringing out some of the best youngsters from all over the country. There are some very good players who play in the back alleys of our country and it is time their talent is showcased before the country, " Divya said. Reasonable Communications Pvt Ltd director Anoop Wadhwa, one of the organisers of the Gully Cricket, said that apart from Divya, they would 'sell' the 16 city teams across different states to other sponsors and celebrities to further popularise it. Film actor Riteish Deshmukh is the brand ambassador of the event, the first season of which was completed in January-February 2009. The spokesperson said that T-10 is played for 10 overs by each team. It is not open to any established players, but only the real gully players in small cities or far flung towns around the country. T-10 format is not officially sanctioned by the Indian cricket board.

It was a jaw dropping moment interlaced with great amusement, on sets of ‘Saregamapa Little Stars’, the popular musical competition on Zee TV.

Swarit Nigam, a 10 year contestant, aired his wish to marry our Desi Gal. A sportive Priyanka, candidly said to the kid that if he sings well she would really accept his proposal. The cute fellow sang to her the title song of ‘Mujse Shaadi Karogi’ and handed out to her a rose. What happened next was a hilarious drama that sent the audience and others on sets into laughing ruptures.

Priyanka Chopra went on stage and put a garland on the kid. While the actress covered her face shying like a bride, Swarit was cheered and raised up by his fellow contestants and show kid-comperes. Priyanka even carried her young ‘Pathi Parmeshwar’ and walked the ramp to take him to home. Swarit’s parents were visibly elated and cheering. But the actress put him down saying he has a competition to win there, so she would not take him for the time being. However, she on lighter tone said the young hubby not to forget her now that he is married to her.

Besides Priyanka, Hurman Baweja was the other quest on the show. Both the actors were on the show to promote their forthcoming movie, ‘What’s Your Rashee?'

Akki slashes his eyebrows for BLUE !!!

Akshay Kumar has always come across as a suave, charismatic and charming man, but this time, he adds an extra edge to his look in Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision Ltd.’s underwater action thriller ‘BLUE’.

To play this role, the director Anthony D’souza & Akshay Kumar sat down to create a look as never played by him before. Anthony envisioned Akshay sporting an edginess which was in tune with his character of a rich businessman who is ruthless and determined once he sets his sight on something. That’s when Akshay suggested that they slash his eyebrows!

Needless to say the director was surprised at this unusual suggestion, but after deliberating over it, he decided to go along with it. And the end result was fabulous!

In the film, audiences will get to see Akshay sporting a slashed eyebrow which lends him a menacing look.

Since Akshay plays a mature character who’s been around the block and is very street-smart & savvy, the director decided to do away with the clichéd French beards and goatees and instead opted for a very distinctive salt and pepper bearded look.

Playing his age, the cut eyebrows combined with the salt and pepper beard gave him just the right killer touch! A very calculating and shrewd look that added a lot of character to his on-screen persona!

In this day & age where actors are extremely particular about their looks and body, here’s one actor who sure doesn’t hesitate to go the extra mile to get the perfect touch! Well, we say - after killer moves, Akshay goes for the killer look!

Both Katrina, Kareena have sexy bodies, says Akshay

Action king can’t decide who’s better

Akshay Kumar has worked with both Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif in several films, but can't decide who is better. The action king says both are "wonderful actresses" and have "sexy bodies".

"Both Kareena and Katrina are really good but who is the better among them depends on their roles in the films. Otherwise, both of them have sexy bodies and are absolutely wonderful actresses," said Akshay when asked to choose his favourite of the two.

Akshay has done four films with Katrina including "Namastey London" and "Singh Is Kinng", while he has worked with Kareena in five that include hits "Ajnabee" and "Aitraaz". The two are set to scorch the screen once again in their upcoming action-cum-romantic drama "Kambakkht Ishq", which releases on Friday.

"In 'Kambakkht Ishq', Kareena has performed very well. Her character required to answer back at me and be strong and she has portrayed it in a powerful, yet lovable way. On the other hand, even Katrina was really good in 'Namastey London'. So it's not really about my choice... it all depends on their roles," the actor told IANS over phone from Puerto Rico, where he is on a holiday.

Akshay, who has spent more than 18 years in the Hindi film industry, says acting with a new league of actresses is a learning experience.

"As a senior actor, I don't always have to give out tips to the younger ones. In fact, I feel I can learn a lot from the younger generation because they have new ways of acting and a different approach to work.

"I cannot particularly point out what I have learnt from them (Kareena and Katrina) yet, but yes, working with them was a learning experience," said the actor, who has also teamed up with Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone and Ayesha Takia.

Akshay plays a Hollywood stuntman in "Kambakkht Ishq", which also boasts of big Hollywood names like Sylvester Stallone, Denise Richards and Brandon Routh - working with whom has been a "dream come true" for the actor.

In the film, Akshay has done what he is best at - action and daredevilry - something that had taken a backseat in his career for a while.

"I decided to stop doing stunts till Aarav (son) turns at least six. Now I'm back at it again. In 'Blue', which is an action thriller, I have done some death-defying stunts like the one where I had to swim 150 feet underwater with 30-40 sharks. But I will talk about it sometime later," he said.

At the moment, the 41-year-old actor is pinning hopes on Sajid Nadiadwala's "Kambakkht Ishq" to bail him out after his much-publicised films "Chandni Chowk To China" and "8X10 Tasveer" fizzled out at the box office.

"I'm expecting great response for this film. Though I had worked very hard in 'Chandni Chowk...' , the response didn't turn out to be as expected. Some people and critics didn't like it and '8X10 Tasveer' was more like an art film, which has a niche market in India. 'Kambakkht Ishq' is a complete entertainer and I hope the audience appreciates it," he said.

Apart from "Kambakkht Ishq", Akshay will also be seen in "Blue", "De Dana Dan" and "Action Replay".

Saif is educating Kareena

The well-read, well-travelled Saif Ali Khan is surely enriching Kareena Kapoor’s personality, who earlier had little academic interest.

However, she recently admitted that her English vocabulary was increasing because of Saif, who introduces her to new words fairly regularly.

Now she has credited him with making her more technology-friendly.

Apparently, Saif has upgraded girlfriend Kareena’s first laptop (also gifted by him) with an Apple MacBook Pro laptop, which he bought for her in London. And, it has become Kareena’s constant companion.

"Till last year, I wasn't very net-savvy but today I can't do without my MacBook Pro. It's all thanks to Saif who has taught me about the internet and its joys. Now I do everything on my laptop from checking out my email and photo-shoot pictures to my endorsements," she has said.

Kareena has also seen bits of Saif's home production “Love Aaj Kal” on the laptop. "The film is gorgeous. I loved it. It's so emotional, funny, cute and touching. I feel Saif, Imtiaz, and Deepika will go five steps ahead with this film," she said.

Katrina-Salman problem grows

Katrina Kaif is going through a rough patch, personally. After a tabloid revealed recently that her phone bill was full of John Abraham’s number, things have not been easy for Kat.

To begin with, boyfriend Salman Khan threw a fit and also reportedly threw her things out of his house, giving momentum to reports about their split.

Katrina first denied having any relationship with John, whom she’s co-starring with in the film “New York”, and then admitted that he’s just a friend with whom she exchanges SMSes.

While the truth has still to surface, Salman Khan’s stance seems apparent - he certainly is in no mood to forgive Kat.

On Saturday (May 30) Salman hosted a bash at his residence for the crew of his TV show ‘10 Ka Dum’. The guests and Salman’s family together watched the first episode of the game show, which went on air the same night.

Notably missing at the party was Katrina, even though she was in Mumbai. It's clear Salman had deliberately snubbed her.

On another note, apparently, Katrina has been invited to feature on ‘10 Ka Dum’. But she requires a partner for the same. However, there is little possibility that John, Abhishek or Shah Rukh will accompany her, as Salman has a problem with all three.

Among the actresses, Katrina has no friends in the industry starting from Priyanka to Bipasha. The only person Kat could have taken is Kareena, but she has already appeared on the show with sister Karisma.

So who will Katrina take to the show? Or, is Sallu not interested in having her on the show as well?
